Halloween STEM Activities
Holidays are a perfect opportunity for themed, educational activities, and Halloween is no exception. Kids love to be stimulated by the weird and wonderful costumes, spooky stories and night-time creatures. These creative Halloween ‘STEM’ (science, technology, engineering and maths) and art projects will fuel the imaginations of little ones as they learn.
Halloween Lanterns (via Red Ted Art)
This ghoulish craft project is safe for small hands and the end product can be used as a Halloween decoration. All you need are some glass jars, tissue paper, PVA glue and a paintbrush. This tutorial from Maggy at RedTedArt uses orange tissue paper to create pumpkin lanterns, but you can encourage your child to use their imagination. Ghosts, monsters, creatures and bugs all look spook-tastic as jar lanterns! Project instructions: here
Pumpkin Volcano (Little Bins For Little Hands)
Why just carve a pumpkin when you can make it erupt instead? Fill a hollowed pumpkin with water and liquid soap, before adding vinegar and baking soda to create a pumpkin volcanic eruption! Mini scientists can learn about how the reaction between the vinegar and baking soda creates a fizzy gas called carbon dioxide.
Slime Sensory Writing Tray (The Imagination Tree)
Writing is much more fun when you are tracing the letters in monster slime! This sensory writing tray is ideal for literacy and numeracy games, along with fine-tuning those fine motor skills. Sensory play encourages exploration, investigation and stimulates cognitive development.
Self Inflating Monster Balloons (Artsy Momma)
Another piece of vinegar and baking soda magic! Watch the monster balloon spookily self-inflate when placed on top of the bottle. When the vinegar and baking soda are mixed the reaction produces carbon dioxide, which then inflates the balloon.
Dancing Ghosts (via Trunkaroo)
Challenge little scientists to make these ghosts and ghouls dance using static energy! This is a fantastic STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and art activity, as it combines science, creativity and fine motor skills. Watch our instructional video to see our paper ghosts bust some moves!
